No Straw Partners
We are delighted to have become a “No Straw Partner” of the “No Straw Campaign” presented by Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, Hong Kong (OPCFHK), to promote cleaning the marine environment.
Hong Kong’s unsustainable and disposable lifestyle is having a serious negative impact on the marine environment. Every year, countless marine creatures suffer from intestinal blockage, malnutrition, and even death after mistakenly ingesting plastic disposables. Through promoting a straw-less lifestyle as the first step, we believe that each and every one of us can work together to alleviate the pressure on our marine creatures.
The OPCFHK launched “No Straw Day” in 2017 with over 600 restaurants, corporates, primary and secondary schools, and universities giving support. The “No Straw Campaign” for 2018 promotes a straw-less and plastic-free lifestyle.
The Club has phrased put plastic straws in all restaurants, banquets and meetings. Paper straws are being used in their place, and only upon request. We strive to take a lead in preserving the environment, and your support is both crucial and very much appreciated.
As you may be aware, Meat Free Monday has become popular in many countries in recent years. The non-profit organisation Green Monday was established in April 2012 as a social enterprise, to advise on environmental policies, promote vegetarianism and to improve people’s quality of life.
Individuals, schools, restaurants, businesses and governments can all participate.
Taking a small step towards changing your eating habits can improve your health and help the environment. Green Monday is not about becoming a vegetarian overnight, and it does not take much time. Eat green every Monday to prove that you can easily and effectively reduce carbon and improve your health.
The Club has created a Green Menu at The Deck, providing more green options at the buffet. Please come and check it out. It is not just for Monday, but every day.
We were delighted to invite the Hong Kong Red Cross to the Club once again this year, in late August, for a blood donation day. As you may know, Hong Kong blood inventories remain very low at the moment, and all types of blood are needed. We would like to take this opportunity to call on all of you to visit any donor centre as soon as possible to help with the Hong Kong blood supply. Please visit www.redcross.org.hk/tc/home.html for further information.
Did you know?
In order to provide fresh blood products for treatments of patients with chronic diseases or in need of surgery because of illness or accident, Hong Kong entirely counts on the generosity of blood donors to donate on a continuous basis. The Blood Donation collected blood will be processed into its components, followed by stringent tests for infectious diseases and bacteria before being used in various treatments. Your single donation can help three or more patients, so please do not underestimate your contribution.
